"As God Commands" by Gabriele Salvatores

Carry on the screen almost 500 pages of the novel is not easy. Even more so if those 500 pages are intertwined with the stories as much as 4 main characters, plus a couple of supporting actors whose lives come together in a single night in a single storm that upsets me is not only the country those same lives forever.

Salvatores tries, picking up a second time a literary work in Amman and supperto with the car itself to screenplay author screen door than 500 pages. The result is frankly disappointing.

It said that of course the book was widely streamlined, literally amputee for most of the events narrated, and it was necessary to focus attention only on certain characters. The choice is obviously Rino and his son Christian protagonists of the film and between Donald and Four Cheese, the two friends Rino, the choice fell on the latter preferring then the murder of the girl in the robbery at the ATM.

The choice in my opinion it seems to me correct. Donato also maintain the character, with all its painful past (his daughter's death and the separation of his wife) too much attention was removed from father and son and was really a story in itself.

Four Cheese instead, and his murder becomes an excuse to investigate further the relationship between Christ and lunge Rino.

what is the problem? E 'which seems a bit' rushed, a bit 'surface. The storm that night of rain and lightning to change the lives of the characters loses all meaning from the symbolic to the book. We talk a lot of influence Shakespieriana, but just one element of the tragic story turns into just a scenic element without value. And where is God? What is the point in the movie title? Check out the end, but without force, without weight. The transposition of letters from the film that I always need plenty of changes, changes in narrative structure, calculated for grafts and amputations, but always without distorting the story, the characters and the essence of the novel. Here it seems to me that you borrow the characters to put together what looks like a single episode of a larger story. The film takes you as it should do, it always seems that sooner or later take-offs, this is only an introduction to something more comprehensive and yet nothing.

do not know, maybe knowing the novel a sense of exaggerated synthesis is amplified, but it is undeniable that at the end Salvatores (which no longer hit a decent film since '97 except for "I'm Not Scared") has created a work banalotta quite a distortion of what was good in the work of Amman. The result is something completely different, as a bond that has only the names of the characters and little else. "As God Commands" is one of the transpositions that lead me to wonder what sense to make a film about a romance novel if he ends up taking a good bit. Write an original story is not it? If it is so difficult to carry 500 pages written from Amman on the screen why do it? Okay rhetorical questions I know, but hopefully some smart director (Salvatores and should be) Porsel end up before a film like that.
